Net Return Speed and Shot Shape Reads
The net a ball flies into after launch isn't just a backstop — how it absorbs and returns the ball can quietly affect the data captured before contact.
Most of the useful data in an indoor fitting session gets captured in the first few feet after the ball leaves the clubface, well before it ever reaches the net at the back of the bay. Even so, the net itself plays a bigger supporting role than most golfers assume.
Why Rebound Speed Matters
A net with too much give lets the ball travel deeper into the bay before slowing, extending the window the tracking system has to work with. One that's strung too tight can cause an early, inconsistent rebound that occasionally interferes with a full capture on faster swings. We tune net tension specifically to give the radar a clean, complete flight window on every swing speed we see.
Where This Shows Up in Shot Shape
Spin-axis tilt — the number that tells you whether a shot is drawing, fading, or flying straight — gets calculated from the earliest part of the flight path, not from anything that happens at the net. But an incomplete capture window from a poorly tuned net can still shorten the data available for that calculation, which is why net condition is on the same maintenance checklist as the mats.
The net isn't part of your swing, but a badly maintained one can still show up in your numbers if it's not doing its job cleanly.
What We Check
Net tension gets inspected on the same rolling schedule as our mat and sensor calibration, since a slack net is easy to miss visually but shows up clearly in flagged, incomplete swing captures over time.
The Takeaway
None of the equipment in a fitting bay works in isolation. A dialed-in radar and camera setup still needs a properly tuned net and a well-maintained mat behind it to produce numbers worth building a fitting recommendation on.
